“TAN THANH SUPPPORTS THE POORS” PROGRAM TAKEN PLACE IN SOC TRANG PROVINCE – BAC LIEU – CAN THO.
“Tan Thanh supports the poors” program has reached the remote and poor areas throughout Mekong Delta. Today, we are going to Soc Trang where majority of minor Khmer people living in a part of Bac Lieu Province and Can Tho City.
1. We are heading to Bung Buoi Hamlet, Lieu Tu Commune, Tran De District, Soc Trang Province.
In a straw house at the village-end, Mr. and Mrs.Tra Muol, aged 38, living with 2 small children. They are poor and have no land, Mrs.Tra Muol gets heart diseases but still picks up some shells to feed the ducks everyday, so Mr. Tra Muol must supports everything to the family from his mason works. His fourteen-year-old son has to stop his studies to help the family as well.

2. From Tran De District, we move a long country path to Bung Thum Hamlet, Long Phu Commune, Long Phu District.
Getting married early, Mr. and Mrs. Quach Thanh Hien, aged 24, have 4 children, including the oldest child is 4 and the smallest is 8 months. Start a new life with nothing; they have to live in grandparents’ house. For his love to family, a husband works very hard to support them. The meals sometimes are not consistent; they must borrow rice from neighbors to eat.

3. Moving long way from Soc Trang to Bac Lieu, we stop at the house of Mr.Tran Van Nam, 67 and Mrs. Doan Kim Thien, 63 located at 16A Hamlet, Phong Tan Commune, Gia Rai District, Bac Lieu Province.
The couple has 2 married children. After marriages, they move to Binh Duong to be the workers. Because the living is tough, their children cannot help their parents anything. The old couple earn livelihood from cultivating a small peas garden near their house. Every 2 or 3 days, they get 20000VND from selling peas and using this sum to buy rice.

4. On way back to the company, we visit Mrs. Nguyen Thi Han, 86, living at Phung Thanh Hamlet, Thanh Tien Commune, Vinh Thanh District, Can Tho City.
He has 8 children who are having difficult lives and far away. At the moment, he is with the youngest son (he’s in late 40) and a grandson (11th grade). The family doesn’t have land and his child must earn money for the father’s medicine and the son’s studies. Mr. Han’s daughter-in-law left his son 15 years ago.
Asking about family situation, he bursts in tears saying: “that’s such a hard life, I have been sick all year, my son wants my grandson to stop studying and help working but he can’t because of my grandson’s good results in school.
